Is social networking still an option?

Social Networking Collage

Make no mistake about it, the 2010 election cycle has begun and candidates seeking public office will be utilizing social media and social networking sites during this election cycle now more than ever to get their messages out to voters.

I once overheard someone say that modern-day politics is all about the selective dissemination of information. Social media takes the control of that information out of the hands of traditional media and puts it into the hands of voters. While traditional print and broadcast media will still play a large role in shaping public opinion, candidates will rely heavily on social media and social networking sites to foster personal connections with online followers, recognizing that any one of them could potentially have a large-scale influence on online voters.

It’s no longer an option for candidates to simply have a Facebook page and Twitter account. It’s a requirement. And it will no longer cut it for them to engage their online followers on a sporadic basis. They will be expected to engage them regularly and to be personal and forthcoming in their efforts. Their success (or lack thereof) will speak to their resourcefulness, accessibility and, ultimately, on how in touch they are with voters.
